And the reason for more terrorism is…..

The number of people killed by terrorists worldwide in 2013 rose by 60 percent compared to the previous year – from 11,133 to 17,958 – with four Sunni Muslim extremist groups responsible for two-thirds of all fatalities, according to a comprehensive annual study.

Eighty-two percent of fatalities occurred in just five countries – Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria, although the number of countries that experienced more than 50 terror-related deaths also rose – to 24, compared with 15 the previous year.

Among the many findings in the new Global Terrorism Index, a project of the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace, is one that calls into question claims that poverty is a key driver of terrorism. Continue reading

Chinese air superiority…..perhaps or perhaps not so much

This week, at Zhuhai, the world’s media was treated to a test flight showing of Chinas’ latest stealth air superiority fighter, the Shenyang J-31 .

It’s touted as fifth-generation aircraft, meaning it’s in the same class as the US F-22 Raptor or the F-35 Lightning 2.The J in its name actually stands for Jian—annihilate, eliminate…..very impressive and meant to scare. And since China’s J-31 and America’s F-35 are the only stealth jets that can be carrier-based, there is a sense of prestige in Zhuhai.

Rarely do the Chinese display an aircraft ahead of the completion of its development, which caused the ground swell when the J-31 (FC meaning for export version) made headlines at the Chinese air show. Plenty of cameras from across the globe were pointed into the sky as foreign military leaders got their first up close look at the aircraft.

But before Raptor pilots start reaching for their ejection handles, a closer look at the J-31 is warranted. Continue reading

Chinese air superiority….maybe

Lots of media coverage and local crowds last week witnessed Chinas’ latest show of air power in Zhuhai, China.

The crowd was there to see something new, the star of the show: the Shenyang J-31 stealth fighter flown by elite pilots of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (designated FC-31 for sales outside China). The J in its name actually stands for Jian—annihilate, eliminate.

But you have to wonder….if this aircraft is so good, and so cutting edge…..why arn’t the Chinese keeping it for themselves, like the Americans did with their F-22 Raptor? Instead, it’s being touted as a cheap stealth fighter for foreign markets as the FC-31, and there are doubts being raised as to whether the PLAAF will field the aircraft at all.

China’s ability to design, build, test, and put into service the J-31 would be illustrious….if Chinese aerospace engineers, did in fact, design and build it….but they didn’t, at least not fully.

Questions remain as to the striking similarity in looks to the US F-35….and China still lacks the capability to build its own engines.

Those in the J-31 are built by Russia. And no matter how China attempts to make technological leaps, via hacking or other means, stealth engine design is something that they haven’t been able to conquer.

There are further reports that this aircraft is severely underpowered and has had difficulty maintaining level flight due to design defects in the airframe. Added to those worrying flying characteristics, are reports that it is suffering these issues without any weapons load being carried….and that’s even before talking targeting systems, radar, and electronic warfare capabilities.

I don’t think US F-22 Raptor pilots will be reaching for their ejector handles just yet.

Putin still thumbing his nose

On Friday 8/11/14, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at least 32 tanks, 16 artillery systems and 30 trucks loaded with fighters and ammunition had crossed into eastern Ukraine from Russia. He said three mobile radar units loaded on trucks also crossed.

Lysenko provided no specific evidence, and it wasn’t immediately clear how his agency had obtained the information since parts of Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia have been under rebel control since August.

Ukraine and the West have continuously accused Moscow of fueling a pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine with troops and weapons.

Russia denies those accusations. Yet ! Continue reading

And this guy wants nuclear weapons?

Social media is a lovely thing isn’t it?

It let’s you see what a person is really thinking, and once it’s out there ….permanently….they can’t delete it or deny they said it.

Which leads us to this little gem of a Tweet from Ayatollah Khamenei.

If apologists for middle eastern terrorists had any doubts about the true thoughts of those that threaten Israel….daily….they should especially take note of his responses to questions put to him regarding Israels’ future fate.
